Brasil Pelo Meio Ambiente

ABOUT IT

Aperam operates more than 100,000 ha of FSC®-certified forest in Brazil to produce its own charcoal used in the steelmaking process as a natural and renewable substitute for fossil fuels (coal-based coke). The company maintains eucalyptus forests and carbonizes the trees to sustainably produce charcoal and completely eradicate the use of extractive coke. The forest provides the ecological services of carbon sequestration and soil enrichment, erosion control and shelter for wildlife.

Results and Objectives

Currently, 39% of Aperam's energy mix comes from renewable charcoal biomass. In a recent joint venture with Ferbasa, the company set itself the goal of expanding Aperam BioEnergia's planted and native forest area by 20%.

There has been a reduction in the use of fossil fuels by replacing them with renewable sources (biofuels), which reduce emissions because they are burning sources that result in biogenic emissions. In addition, there has been a migration from non-renewable to renewable sources of electricity.

In 2022, Aperam achieved a carbon-neutral balance in scopes 1 and 2, thanks to the sequestering of 412,000 tons of CO2 equivalent by the BioEnergia unit's planted forests. By 2030, the company's goal is to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 30% (based on 2015), in addition to recycling 97% of its waste.
