Brazil for the Environment

ABOUT IT

The Energy Transition Project promotes the substitution of natural gas for biomass in steam production at Ingredion's plants in Brazil, as well as migrating from the captive energy market to the free market, achieving 100% renewable energy in the national operation. The project is taking place at all the company's plants in Brazil, with the installation of biomass boilers at the Cabo de Santo Agostinho/PE, Mogi Guaçu/SP and Balsa Nova/PR plants; and the purchase of renewable electricity at the three aforementioned plants as well as at the São Gonçalo/RJ plant.

This is a collaborative project between... Ingredion and ComBio.

Results and Objectives

The project aims to replace the use of natural gas with biomass, as well as migrate from the regulated energy market to the free market, using a renewable energy source starting in 2024. At the end of this boiler replacement process, it is estimated that... 60% reduction in direct emissions. Therefore, the project contributes to the global target of reducing the company's direct emissions by 28% by 2030, ...aiming to reduce the environmental impact of operations. Furthermore, there is support for the development of the local economy through the acquisition of local biomass and by increasing job creation in the region with the construction of these new boilers. At the Cabo de Santo Agostinho (Pernambuco) plant, energy is already generated from a biomass boiler. At the Mogi Guaçu (São Paulo) and Balsa Nova (Paraná) plants, the company has already replaced natural gas with biomass., resulting in a reduction of more than 54% in the use of natural gas.

The efforts of Ingredion In 2023, they received external recognition with the Amcham Eco Award and the Business Ethics Award for the Clean Energy Biomass Project in Brazil. The company was also invited to found the Amcham Decarbonization Hub.
