Suzano Carbon Removal Commitment

Suzano

ABOUT IT

In 2020, the Company committed to going beyond being carbon neutral and to actually reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This means that Suzano is committed to removing more GHGs from the atmosphere than it emits, that is, working to be even more positive for the climate through the net removal of 40 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere by 2025, five years ahead of the original target (2030).

Considering the balance between Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and removals from Suzano's forest inventory, actions on two fronts will be prioritized to achieve this goal:

Industrial:

In the Industrial Units, the company seeks to reduce emissions in retrofit projects and increase the efficiency of ovens, boilers and turbo generators in a gradual movement of reduction and substitution of more emitting fuels (such as fuel oil and natural gas) for less emitting fuels (such as biomass and black liquor), and also through the adoption of new technologies such as biomass gasification at the future Ribas do Rio Pardo Unit (MS).

Forestry:

Reduction of emissions through the use of cutting-edge technologies linked to the use of equipment in forestry operations, wood transport and the recommendation of the best transportation mode, optimization of operating routes and expansion of the cargo box through the use of hexatrains. Furthermore, it carries out studies aimed at the use of alternative fuels to replace diesel oil, autonomous and electrical equipment, remote support systems and reducing the need for on-site visits, as well as automatic detection of failures and deviations.

The project carries external certification

Results and Objectives

At the end of 2021, an accumulated balance of -24.096.569 ton CO₂ equivalent emissions which represents 60% of the target
