ABOUT IT
The Monitored Basin Program aims to environmentally monitor the Guariroba and Lageado stream basins in Campo Grande/MS, which are the city's two main water supply sources.
Various environmental studies and monitoring for a wide variety of purposes are carried out on a monthly basis so that the concessionaire has control over water quality and up-to-date information on land use and occupation in the river basins. Through constant environmental monitoring, the concessionaire is able to anticipate events that could affect water quality and quantity, and the inspection bodies obtain valuable information for their inspections.
Monitoring is carried out on various fronts, such as: (I) quantity of sediment in the water bodies; (II) water quality; (III) level of siltation in the reservoir; (iv) microbiological indicators of water quality; (v) assessment of the quantity of surface and groundwater; (vi) water balance; (v) meteorological monitoring. This monitoring goes far beyond water quality analysis and has expanded over time, giving rise to the Monitored Basin Program.
The implementation of the project has been completed and the project will be maintained..
Results and Objectives
Short-term: knowledge of the current situation of the river basin in terms of: water quality, sediment transport; precipitation and other meteorological data; water balance; hydrobiology; reservoir siltation; groundwater quality; flow.
Medium term: made it possible to analyze diffuse pollution events at certain points in the basin and to direct the environmental agencies' inspections
Long-term: obtaining a statistically significant history of each study/parameter evaluated.
The fact that we have facts and data to prove the current situation of the watersheds has provided some intangible results such as:
1) Defense against the flexibilization of the Lageado APA Management Plan, especially in relation to the proposed occupation of the rural area of the Lageado Basin by allotments, the data generated in the Monitored Basin Program were decisive for this.
2) Defending against the flexibilization of the Guariroba APA Management Plan, especially in relation to the proposal to allow pig farming, industries and the use of pesticides in the basin, the data generated in the Monitored Basin Program were decisive for this.
