ABOUT IT
The project utilizes phosphogypsum, a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production, as an agricultural input to improve soil quality, promoting a circular economy and mitigating environmental impacts. Agricultural gypsum provides calcium and sulfur to plants, neutralizes toxic aluminum in the subsoil, deepens roots, and increases water and nutrient absorption, contributing to crop resilience and carbon sequestration in the soil.
The initiative reduces stockpiling areas and environmental risks associated with storage, and promotes the utilization of 5.5 million tons of gypsum per year, benefiting approximately 5 million hectares of productive land. Gypsum has become Mosaic's second best-selling product and has received certification for use in organic agriculture.
Results and Objectives
Objectives
Reduce risks in the storage and stacking of gypsum;
To provide farmers with a product that improves soil health and root growth;
To contribute to agricultural sustainability and the mitigation of environmental impacts;
Supporting the circular economy and reducing industrial waste;
To enable increased agricultural productivity, especially in sugarcane, with the potential to increase production by up to 10%.
Results (to date / projected)
5.5 million tons of gypsum diverted from landfills and dams;
Serving more than 15 Brazilian states;
Benefiting approximately 5 million hectares of productive land;
Certification for use in organic agriculture;
The projected increase in agricultural productivity, especially in sugarcane cultivation, indirectly impacting ethanol/biomethane production.
