Brazil for the Environment

ABOUT IT

Be8's "Being Sustainable" program, created in 2022, is based on the circular economy to generate socio-environmental benefits in Rio Grande do Sul. From a partnership with Cooperativa Amigos do Meio Ambiente (Coama) and the TransformAção projectThe company has installed collection points for used cooking oil (UCO) and, with the help of the support from the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE - RS)agreements have been signed with restaurants and bars to donate the food.
The cooperative is responsible for collecting, filtering and transporting the material to Be8 and all the oil is bought by the company and used in the production of biodiesel at the Passo Fundo industrial unit. In addition to the environmental benefits achieved by disposing of the oil correctly, it has also managed to generate positive economic impacts. The workers also receive SEBRAE training in entrepreneurship.
In 2023, they expanded the number of collection municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul - including Casca and Ronda Alta - and for 2024 they are planning a further expansion of the program, which will include the participation of new cooperatives and entry into other Brazilian states.
At the end of 2023, Be8 signed a protocol of intentions with the National Association of Waste Pickers (ANCAT) to promote the circular economy of used cooking oil. The aim is to extend the socio-environmental benefits of the Be8 Ser Sustentável Program to other regions of Brazil.
There is no deadline for completion, it is an ongoing project.

Results and Objectives

The project aims to:
  • Development of cooperatives;
  • Increased collection of used cooking oil;
  • Biodiesel production from used cooking oil;
Be8 uses renewable raw materials and reuses materials that would otherwise be discarded in nature, such as used cooking oil (UCO), which accounted for 1,10% of the total in 2023. The use of UCO in biodiesel production generates two major environmental benefits: in addition to reusing material that is often disposed of incorrectly, the greenhouse gas emissions of UCO-based biodiesel can be up to 40% lower than those produced with virgin soybean oil and up to 80% lower than those of conventional diesel.
