ABOUT IT
O Energy Transition Project with Biomethane It is an initiative of Cebrace, the largest glass producer in South America, focused on reducing emissions and transitioning to clean energy sources. In May 2023, the unit of Jacareí (SP) started using biomethane in their float glass furnaces, becoming the first company in the Brazilian glass sector to adopt biofuel in industrial processes.
The fuel used is obtained from urban solid waste from the Jambeiro (SP) landfill, replacing part of the natural gas consumed and significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the operation. The initiative is part of the company's commitment to reduce its emissions by 33% by 2030 e achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Results and Objectives
The project aims to diversify the energy matrix from Cebrace, incorporating low-impact renewable sources and strengthening the energy transition from the industrial sector.
Among the main results achieved are:
Annual reduction of 25,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to planting 125,000 trees;
Partial replacement of natural gas with biomethane., low-carbon fuel produced locally;
Production of glass with lower embodied carbon., ensured by Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs);
Public and industry recognition as a benchmark case in sustainability and circular economy;
Expansion planning the use of biomethane for other manufacturing units.
