ABOUT IT
O Project for the Reuse of Home Scrap of Injection Molded Plastic Parts in the Automotive Sector, developed by General Motors of Brazil, consists of reuse of internally generated plastic scrap in the process of injection molding of automotive parts. The initiative was applied in units in São Caetano do Sul and São José dos Campos (SP), focusing on bumper production.
The project's distinguishing feature lies in integration of different polypropylene compounds in a single application, a practice not usual in the global automotive sector, which normally restricts the use of scrap to identical materials. This approach made it possible to reuse of internal plastic waste, strengthening the adoption of practices aligned with Circular Economy and to Reducing the generation of solid waste.
Results and Objectives
Reusing home scraps made from plastic parts originating from the injection molding process.
Reduce the volume of plastic waste generated internally., reducing the need for disposal.
Apply polypropylene compounds of different specifications. in a single automotive part.
To promote the integration of circular economy practices. in the automotive production process.
To contribute to the reduction of indirect carbon emissions., associated with the disposal and manufacture of new inputs.
Reusing 26 tons of plastic per year. originating from the internal production process.
Incorporation of 5% of recycled plastic scrap. in the manufacture of new painted bumpers.
Reducing the need to dispose of or sell plastic scrap. for third parties.
Project completion in September 2024, with consolidated results in the Southeast units.
Integration of different types of polypropylene in the same product, ensuring the reuse of materials with different specifications.
