ABOUT IT

Sustainability is one of the strategic pillars of Whirlpool, the home appliance manufacturer and owner of the Brastemp, Consul and Kitchen Aid brands in Brazil.
Whirlpool constantly invests in environmental management projects and sustainable actions that involve its employees, who are multipliers of good practices in the units, and in joint actions with the community. This is the premise of its sustainability strategy, participating in the UN Global Compact and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), prioritizing in this project actions related to the SDGs 12 - Sustainable Consumption and Production, 13 - Combating Climate Change, 14 - Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources and 15 - Terrestrial Ecosystems and BiodiversityThe aim is to promote practices that value and protect Brazilian fauna and flora.

At Whirlpool's Joinville plant, the preservation and responsible use of natural resources is fundamental to consolidating growth and sustainable industrial innovation. The plant has a total area of 666,986 m², 264,383 m² are preserved green areas dedicated to maintaining local ecosystems. On the Company's premises, around 40% of the site area is preserved with vegetation predominantly typical of the Atlantic Forestwhere the the presence of 96 species of trees and approximately 1,361 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Among the species mapped, four were found to be included in CONSEMA Resolution 02/2011, which lists the following species endangered species for the state of Santa CatarinaThese are: three species are from the bird group: Piculus flavigula (pileated woodpecker), Ramphocelus bresilius (tiê-sangue) and Lanio cristatus (tiê-galo); and one mammal: Alouatta guariba (howler monkey).

The activity developed is an awareness program for the preservation of biodiversity, where employees, their families and the local population learn about the importance of conserving the region's fauna and flora by visiting green areas.

In order to conserve and protect local biodiversity, an o program called Sustainable Circuit. This circuit has 12 stations located at strategic points on the site, where the region's fauna and flora are monitored, as well as being used to raise awareness among the company's employees and visitors.

In this way, Whirlpool reinforces its commitment to mitigating the environmental impacts of our operations, contributing to minimizing climate change, preserving water resources and biodiversity.

Results and Objectives

The Sustainable Circuit is a trail through the industrial park, made up of ecological stations located at strategic points on the site, where the following activities take place:

i) monitoring the region's fauna and flora using a camera trap, also known as a camera trap;

ii) collection and analysis of water and effluent quality;

iii) measuring and controlling the use of water resources;

iv) solid waste management and

v) pest control.

Each station has a purpose to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, and each month the classes are announced so that employees can sign up, while on commemorative dates invitations are open to external stakeholders (schools, environmental agencies and employees' families).
On this route, the environmental team and its facilitators guide employees and visitors (stakeholders) to get to know the 12 stations.

Main Results:

Promotion and maintenance of local biodiversity with the installation of 4 native stingless bee hives and expansion through the implantation of 18 baits in the green areas.
40% of preserved green area in the industrial park.
18 biological stations for pest control.
1361 species of animals.
96 species of trees.
