Brazil for the Environment

ABOUT IT

The project Technology for Converting Environmental Liabilities into a Product for Agricultural Fertilization (Phosphogypsum) It is an initiative of Mosaic Fertilizers that transforms a Industrial waste transformed into a high-value-added agricultural input., strengthening the principles of circular economy and from productive sustainability.

O phosphogypsum it is a byproduct of the phosphoric acid production process, widely used in fertilizer manufacturing. Traditionally considered a environmental liability, the material became reused as a soil amendment and conditioner., contributing to the acidity reduction, improvement of the physical structure of the soil e increased availability of calcium and sulfur for the plants.

This approach allows reduce the demand for natural mineral resources, reduce the volume of accumulated waste e to avoid environmental impacts associated with the storage of phosphogypsum, in addition to generate economic and environmental value through a sustainable and productive destination.

Results and Objectives

Objectives

  • Converting environmental liabilities into value-added agricultural products;

  • Reduce the accumulation of phosphogypsum in disposal areas., minimizing risks and space occupation;

  • To improve soil fertility and structure., promoting greater agricultural productivity;

  • To reduce the need for extraction of new mineral resources.;

  • Reduce emissions and logistical impacts., thus avoiding the transportation of waste for disposal;

  • Strengthen the integration between industry and agriculture., consolidating practices of circular economy;

  • Contribute to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) e SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Results

  • More than 4 million tons of phosphogypsum allocated annually for sustainable agricultural use;

  • Elimination of the accumulation of large volumes. of waste in disposal areas;

  • Improving the quality and structure of agricultural soils., with an increase in availability of calcium and sulfur;

  • Reducing the need for natural mineral inputs;

  • Reduction of emissions and logistics costs, by preventing transportation to disposal areas;

  • Business development driven internally, no additional cost for the company;

  • One of the greatest success stories in circular economy. in the Brazilian fertilizer industry.
