ABOUT IT

The project Technology for Converting Environmental Liabilities into Agricultural Fertilizer (Phosphogypsum) represents a Innovative initiative from Mosaic Fertilizantes to transform environmental liabilities in value-added agricultural products, aligning the operation with the principles of circular economy.

Annually, the company generates approximately 1 million tons of phosphogypsum as an industrial byproduct — material previously stored in piles, forming a relevant environmental liability.

As the project developed, the following were adopted technologies for enhancing and purifying phosphogypsum, as well as business strategies which allowed its direct application in agriculture as a soil amendment and conditioner.

Currently, they are approximately 1.2 million tons are shipped per year., and with the new stage of processing by particle size segregation, the volume should reach 1.4 million tons per year.

The result is a significant reduction of accumulated stock, recovery of degraded areas, forest restoration e economic valuation of a material previously considered waste.

Results and Objectives

Objectives

  • Reduce the accumulation of phosphogypsum. in storage areas, mitigating environmental risks;

  • Converting industrial liabilities into agricultural inputs sustainable;

  • To improve the quality and applicability of phosphogypsum. for direct use in agriculture;

  • Promoting a circular economy in Mosaic's production chain;

  • Restoring forest areas previously occupied by piles of waste;

  • To generate economic and social benefits. associated with the agricultural use of the product.

Results (so far)

  • 1.2 million tons of phosphogypsum shipped annually, exceeding the annual generation of the byproduct;

  • Increased agricultural distribution to 1.4 million tons/year with new processing technology;

  • Significant reduction of environmental liabilities. accumulated;

  • Rehabilitation of areas used for storage. waste management, with a focus on forest restoration;

  • Creation of economic value from an industrial byproduct;

  • Direct contribution to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) e SDG 15 (Life on Land).
