Topsoil application for revegetation of areas with exposed soil (waste rock dump slopes)
ABOUT IT
O Topsoil Project, developed by Mosaic Fertilizers node Catalão Mining and Chemical Complex (GO), its objective is revegetate areas of waste rock deposits through topsoil application, a topsoil layer rich in organic matter, obtained during the stripping of mining faces.
This practice promotes the natural regeneration of vegetation, improves soil structure and fertility, reduces surface erosion e accelerates ecological succession, without needing to no-till farming or use of chemical inputs.
The project reinforces the company's commitment to... environmental conservation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, especially the SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action) e SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
Furthermore, this is an action. replicable, of low cost e high positive environmental impact, with significant results in soil stabilization e improvement of the local landscape.

Revegetate areas of exposed soil. and reduce erosion processes;
Restore soil fertility and structure. through the reuse of topsoil;
Promote natural regeneration. from vegetation that does not require planting;
Contribute to SDGs 15, 13 and 12, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability;
Reduce environmental remediation costs, adopting low-impact and highly efficient solutions.
Results (to date / achieved)
Total area recovered: 144.18 hectares;
Reducing surface erosion: up to 90% soil stabilization in the treated areas;
Rate of spontaneous vegetation cover: superior to 70% in areas with topsoil (vs. <20% in untreated areas);
Increased carbon sequestration e water retention in the soil;
Improvement of the local landscape e cost reduction with no-till farming and maintenance.
