Clean Barra Project

The Barra Limpa project started in 2017 with the purpose of diagnosing and mitigating impacts associated with the release of sewage in the Jacarepaguá lagoon complex in Rio de Janeiro.

The region of influence of the complex has been extensively occupied over the last few decades, with sewage and effluents being continuously released directly into the water bodies that are in contact with the lagoon complex and ultimately reach the Barra da Tijuca beach.

O projeto conta com uma equipe multidisciplinar constituída de Engenheiros Florestal, Ambiental, Agrícola, Químico e Civil, Advogados, Administradores, Biólogos, entre outros. Foi conduzida uma análise de dados ambientais e operacionais do sistema de coleta e tratamento atual, sendo possível estabelecer critérios para a priorização de ações de recuperação ambiental.

The diagnosis and conceptual strategy were presented at a public hearing convened by the Public Prosecution Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro on 09/20/2018, at the community council of Barra da Tijuca with the participation of civil society representatives. This hearing resulted in the signature of the Term of Conduct Adjustment by the utility company – at the time (CEDAE) – and the Public Prosecution Office of Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the notification of condominiums not connected to the current network and the recovery of the entire pumping structure in the region.

In addition to these professionals, residents of Barra da Tijuca also participated and collaborated, seeking to provide ample visibility to illegal occurrences that prevent local society and tourists from taking advantage of the public good, thus enforcing the legislation in force for the sanitation sector.

The project is still being executed
