Brasil Pelo Meio Ambiente

ABOUT IT

Suzano has different projects with an emphasis on reducing natural gas consumption in the Lime Kilns. Each project is being developed in one unit, however, if successful, they will be replicated in all of the company's Lime Kilns (Imperatiz, Mucuri, Aracruz, Jacareí, Três Lagoas, Suzano and Limeira). In addition to the economic benefits, a reduction in the burning of natural gas reduces CO2 emissions.

Thor Methanol: increase in the generation of renewable methanol (chemical recovery process from the pulp industry) as a substitute fuel for natural gas in the Lime Kilns.

Virtual Lime Sludge Sensor: virtual lime sludge humidity sensor, to be used as an optimizer and anticipator of kiln control.

Virtual Carbonate Sensor: virtual sensor of the lime quality produced by the kilns, to be used in the kilns' advanced controls to increase energy efficiency.

Digital Twins: simulation of furnace combustion phenomena in order to optimize air/fuel ratios and increase furnace energy efficiency.

Results and Objectives

In 2022, the set of optimization projects had already reduced natural gas consumption by 600,000 m³. The main results expected for each project are:

Thor Methanol: estimated savings of 400,000 m³ of NG per year in Aracruz.

Virtual Lime Sludge Sensor: estimated savings of 500,000 m³ of NG per year in Três Lagoas.

Virtual Carbonate Sensor: estimated savings of 1,000,000 m³ of NG per year in Três Lagoas.

Digital Twins: estimated savings of 1,000,000 m³ of NG per year in Três Lagoas.
