ABOUT IT
The company works to divert waste generated in data center operations and construction from landfills. For the copper cables generated in data center operations, Scala, in partnership with Furukawa Electric LatAm, recycles the material through the Green IT program, reverting the value generated into actions for the community around the data centers.
In addition, the company carried out a one-off action to recycle waste from electrical and electronic equipment together with Manureversa, which has a partnership with the Refloresta Institute to plant tree seedlings from a certain amount of recycled waste, as well as identifying farmers interested in restoring degraded areas on their properties who could not afford it.
Results and Objectives
Since its foundation, Scala has diverted more than 3,000 tons of waste from landfills, using practices such as recycling, composting and biomass production. Of these, 16 tons of copper cables have been recycled through the Green IT program. This resulted in a reduction in the extraction of 1,425 tons of copper from nature, and a saving of 1,434,000 kWh, equivalent to the energy consumption of 956 homes for one month.
In addition, Scala Data Centers were built in compliance with LEED Certification requirements, completely recycled 100% of the lubricating oil used in generator maintenance, as well as preparing and executing a Waste Management Plan for each Data Center.
In 2022, Scala was recognized by Manureversa for recycling more than 180 tons of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), resulting in the planting of 100 native seedlings in partnership with the Refloresta Institute that identified farmers interested in restoring degraded areas on their properties. This restoration process involved constant monitoring over 36 months to ensure the project's progress.
