Brasil Pelo Meio Ambiente

ABOUT IT

Bikes for the Planet is the first project in the world to generate carbon credits through emissions avoided by replacing polluting transportation with bicycles.

The initiative began in 2019, in conjunction with São Paulo City Hall. In 2022, this time in partnership with Rio de Janeiro City Hall, the credits issued were made available at the inauguration of the Rio's Bolsa Verde, for the world's first auction of credits in this segment.

The carbon credits generated are an important incentive tool for adopting more sustainable travel practices.

Results and Objectives

The first phase saw the emission of 120 carbon credits or 120 tons of CO2 equivalent avoided in São Paulo. In the second phase of the project, 2309 credits were issued, this time also considering operations in Rio de Janeiro, covering the period from December 2018 to January 2021.

More than 100 companies attended the auction, held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and more than $12,000 was raised through the sale of carbon credits.

Taking into account the operations in the four countries where Tembici operates (Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia), the potential for generation is more than 100,000 credits per year, all of which are generated within the urban perimeter.
