Brasil Pelo Meio Ambiente

ABOUT IT

The Replanting Life Program (PRV), developed by the State Water and Sewage Company (CEDAE), is an initiative that employs, trains and pays people serving sentences to work in the ecological restoration production chain in Rio de Janeiro.

The PRV goes to detention centers in the state of Rio de Janeiro, interviews, selects and hires inmates to work on everything from collecting seeds and producing forest seedlings to planting, maintaining and monitoring restoration areas, with the aim of recovering and protecting public water supplies.

The seedlings produced are used by the company's forest restoration teams or made available free of charge to support other projects that aim to preserve water resources. By offering professional training, employment and payment for ecological restoration, the PRV not only reduces prison idleness, but also equips participants with important skills for their reintegration into society.

Results and Objectives

CEDAE's nurseries work with more than 260 native species of the Atlantic Forest and have an installed production capacity of 2.1 million seedlings a year. In addition, more than 3 million trees have already been planted by the program.

CEDAE is committed to restoring and preserving 30,000 hectares by 2050, as a way of contributing to the state of Rio de Janeiro's goals.

The PRV has already directly benefited more than 6,000 convicts and is currently the resocialization project that employs the most people serving sentences in Brazil.
