ABOUT IT
Suzano's project aims to increase the circularity of its industrial waste, so the company invests in recovery solutions that turn waste into new products, such as fertilizers and soil improvers. The " Recovery of industrial waste" project aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills by 70% until 2030. This waste is then used to make soil improvers, fertilizers, biomass for energy generation and sold for use in other industries. Currently, 4 of Suzano's 12 mills are already zero landfill sites: Rio Verde, Limeira, Jacareí and Mogi das Cruzes.
The management residues that are transformed into new products are scrubbing rejects, dregs, grits, ashes, lime mud and sludge from the effluent treatment plant, and the soil improvers are absorbed by forestry operations at more competitive costs than those originating from limestone. Suzano's project has developed strategies according to the local context. For example, the Imperatriz and Três Lagoas units have a partnership with the company Vida, which transforms inorganic waste into soil improvers and composts organic waste to become fertilizer. The Jacareí unit has a partnership with Veolia to make soil improvers from inorganic waste and the Mucuri unit has a partnership with Agrocp, which is producing an organic compost that incorporates both organic and inorganic waste.
