reCICLO
Trashin e Havaianas
ABOUT IT
Havaianas, in a partnership with Trashin, developed Havaianas reCICLO in Brazil, a program for the reverse logistics and recycling of discontinued sandals, thus encouraging the reinsertion of their materials into the market, seeking a more circular production chain.
The project is based on the correct destination of these materials based on final consumer engagement and on the maximum use of leftovers from the production process, avoiding landfills and reducing the consumption of natural resources. In addition to reducing environmental impact, recycling products at different stages of the production chain generates income and education for partner recycling cooperatives.
These cooperatives are instructed to separate the components from the contents they receive, seeking to provide the final destination of the materials. All Havaianas flip-flops, regardless of their state, are sent for recycling to be transformed into tires, rugs and accessories. This entire process is monitored and quantified.
Furthermore, the entire logistical route of the program was structured to be zero-carbon, using bicycles for collection in some stores and offsetting carbon emitted by other transportation modes - such as cars and trucks - through the planting and preservation of trees in the Amazon.
Results and Objectives
From the outset, the project has already ensured the proper disposal and recycling of a volume equivalent to 71% soccer fans at the Maracanã stadium wearing Havaianas flip-flops, or 22.7 tons.
Furthermore, the entire logistical route of the program was structured to be zero-carbon, using bicycles for collection in some stores and offsetting carbon emitted by other transportation modes - such as cars and trucks - through the planting and preservation of trees in the Amazon.
Since the start of the project, we have already avoided the emission of 686.8 kg of carbon dioxide through bicycle collections and neutralized the emission of 2,853.5 kg of carbon dioxide.
Used sandals, which were previously sent to landfills, are now separated and sold by partner recycling cooperatives, just as aluminum and glass, for instance
By working with cooperatives, we have already contributed to the generation of additional income for over 1000 families. The cooperatives that are participating in the project receive technical guidance and, in some cases, financial assistance for administrative and physical structuring purposes.
