ABOUT IT

Replantando Vida (Replanting Life) is the socio-environmental program of Companhia Estadual de Águas e Esgotos – CEDAE (the Rio de Janeiro State Water and Sewage Company), which aims to contribute to the resocialization of prisoners in the Rio de Janeiro prison system by offering job opportunities, social inclusion, training, and income generation. Some of the program’s most important activities are its reforestation actions.. 

These activities range from the collection and processing of forest seeds and seedling production to the planting,, produção de mudasmaintenance and monitoring of reforestation areas – with all steps being carried out by individuals serving their prison sentences.  

This project is in progress and has guaranteed resources until 2026  

Results and Objectives

The program has already benefited around 6,000 imprisoned individuals and more than 3 million trees have been planted.The reforestation area targeted by the project amounts to 600 hectares.  

Furthermore, CEDAE seeks to establish partnerships with public and private institutions to advance forest restoration endeavors supported by prison work. The program is carried out on an ongoing basis, with no expected completion date.
