ABOUT IT
In 2016, a disposable garbage bag holder was created, made from recycled cardboard, which is recyclable, hygienic, economical, easy to assemble and water-resistant. Available in three sizes, the product allows educational messages and logos to be printed on it. Between 2018 and 2023, the initiative was present at more than 590 events in schools, homes, parks, beaches, concerts and fairs, directly impacting 5.4 million people and indirectly 28.7 million. Around 600,000 supports were produced, preventing 1,776 tons of waste from being disposed of in landfills or dumps.
The project focused on two strands of environmental education. In schools, kits containing garbage bags and holders were given to teachers, who passed them on to their students, teaching them about the importance of separating solid waste at the source. At home, the students, with the participation of their parents, assembled the racks and separated the waste. The bags were returned to the school, marking the contents collected, which were sold in partnership with local cooperatives, with part of the proceeds going to books, school supplies and food parcels.
In 2021, after winning 2nd place in the Climaton Sertãozinho Bioma, the creation of the Niltex Home Kit was implemented. A pilot project was started, where residents of a city received the kits, and a local coordinator was chosen to facilitate communication via WhatsApp groups. The results were immediate, with glass collection, for example, going from 1.1 tons in May to 2.5 tons in June, in just one neighborhood. This system has dignified the work of the waste pickers, increased their income, returned more raw materials to the industry, preserved the environment and created jobs in the municipality.
The project has received several awards: 1st place in the CIESP Award, 3rd place in the Plastic South Award in 2021, and the ANAMMA Smart Cities seal in 2022. In 2023, it was awarded 1st place in the Startups category of the IMMENSITÀ Environmental Awareness Award, as well as being presented at COP28 as an example of good environmental practices. In March 2024, the project was featured on Rede Globo's "Pequenas Empresas Grandes Negócios" program.
With a focus on entrepreneurship, dignity and increasing recycling, the Niltex project aims to strengthen the work of waste pickers and increase recycling rates.
