Brazil for the Environment

ABOUT IT

Committed to the conservation of healthy and abundant forests and also to the development of the communities of which it is a part, Sylvamo has entered into a partnership with the ATA Institute, a non-governmental organization whose main mission is to value ingredients, producers and productive territories in Brazil. In 2020, the Green Honey Project was born from the union of these organizations' purposes. The initiative aims to encourage the responsible management of native stingless bees, to value the national beekeeper and the ecosystem service of pollination of the Atlantic Forest. Its mission is to value the existence of bees and forests and to multiply the conditions necessary for the sustainability of this relationship.

Through integrated actions, the Verde Mel project works in strategic territories, stimulating production chains and bringing recognition to honey as a biological and gastronomic product of Brazil. The project currently has a central meliponary in Brotas (SP), which works with: multiplication of colonies, continuous expansion of the herd; training of producers and professionals involved in the entire chain; production of honey and by-products; distribution of colonies after multiplication to strategic producers in ecological restoration and productive capacity.

The distribution of colonies will allow strategic pollination of the restoration process, as well as the development of the local economy and family farming which, through honey and other by-products, will be able to increase their income in a sustainable way.

The project has a network of partners that includes private companies, civil society organizations and educational institutions with a public bias.

Results and Objectives

The aim is that, after 10 years of the project, the contribution to the ecological recovery process will reach more than 120,000 hectares of native forest benefiting from the pollination service.

Below are the project's impacts to date:

- Formalization and structured strengthening of the activity through the creation of a meliponary in Brotas (SP);
- Support in the direct conservation of fauna biodiversity, with native bees, and indirectly by strengthening ecological restoration and habitat for other species.
- We currently have more than 200 colonies of bees in multiplication, growing the stock by more than 300%.
- Training more than 30 key players to disseminate and expand the work, including producers, NGOs, professionals and other local players and multipliers.
