ABOUT IT
The project aims to promote nature-based solutions (NBS) by developing natural infrastructure in degraded areas of the Serra da Mantiqueira, known for its role in providing environmental services. The forest restoration actions within the scope of the Friend of the Forest Program are the result of a partnership between Iniciativa Verde and the Mantiqueira Conservation Plan.
Amigo da Floresta (Friend of the Forest) is a program run by Iniciativa Verde that plants native Atlantic Forest trees in deforested areas of the Cantareira System, one of the world's main water sources. In this way we can help to recover the riverbanks and springs (riparian forests) of the Cantareira System; currently, 70% of them are degraded, as well as promoting extensive awareness among our colleagues and engaging them in the cause of the environment.
Equivalent greenhouse gas emissions are estimated using databases such as the GHG Protocol, adapted for Brazil by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, and other scientific research.
We received a certificate from the Green Initiative for the project, which allows us to constantly assess the progress of the process.
Results and Objectives
Compensation within the Carbon Free program is voluntary and begins with measuring the greenhouse gas emissions related to a product or activity. The values are converted into carbon equivalent and then the area of Atlantic Forest needed to absorb and store this carbon is calculated. These restorations aim not only to remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, but to add values that increase the environmental quality of rural landscapes, maximizing benefits for biodiversity, water resources and soil conservation.
368 native trees were replanted in an area of degraded forest
