Plant to Neutralize

ABOUT IT

The project, carried out in partnership with the Terrazul Institute, aims to encourage the protection of mangroves in the Rio Environmental Protection and Urban Recovery Area (APARU) Jequiá, sequestering carbon and recovering degraded areas by planting seedlings of endogenous species.

To make the project a reality, it was necessary to get closer to the residents of Colônia Z10 (located in APARU). The Colony, one of the oldest fishing communities in Brazil, works for the sustainability of the area and provides labor for the project.

.

Starting in September 2021, after a long process of gathering data and identifying problems, the work proposal was drawn up: clean up the areas to plant seedlings, boosting ecosystem regeneration and carbon capture and sequestration.

As a result, field inspections were carried out along the entire mangrove margin, identifying the most suitable areas for planting. Glimpses without vegetation were also identified and these places became the focus for the restoration movement. The areas surveyed totaled 25.29 hectares. Between December/2021 and July/2022, the team cleaned up the priority areas and planted endogenous seedlings.

Results and Objectives

Between September 2021 and July 2022, 487.87 kg of waste was collected and 865 seedlings of endogenous mangrove species were planted. The main challenge at the moment is the dumping of sewage on the site, which is responsible for the death of some of the seedlings.

The aim of the project for the cycle is to understand the reasons why some seedlings don't take hold in the soil, creating partnerships with sanitation companies to raise awareness among the population about the dumping of untreated effluent on the site. The next step is to calculate the potential for carbon removal, both by the vegetation and by the soil.
