ABOUT IT
O green polyethylene, produced from ethanol from sugarcane node industrial complex of Triunfo (RS), is an initiative developed by Braskem to replace fossil-based polyethylene with a renewable alternative.
Released in 2010, The project made it possible to world's first green ethylene plant, with an initial investment of US$ 290 million e production capacity of 200,000 tons per year, later expanded to 275 thousand tons per year.
The initiative integrates the chain sugarcane energy and contributes to bioeconomy and industrial decarbonization in Brazil, based on sustainable agricultural practices and international certifications.
Results and Objectives
Environmental:
Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. through the replacement of fossil-based plastic resins with renewable alternatives.
Promoting the circular economy, using a product 100% recyclable and with a smaller carbon footprint.
Contribute to national climate goals (NDCs) and commitments made in Paris Agreement.
Avoid direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2) through the use of renewable raw materials.
Economic and productive:
Strengthen the national bioeconomy and generate added value for the sugarcane supply chain.
Expand exports e attract international investments in innovation and industrial sustainability.
Developing new resins and renewable applications., with expansion targets up to 2030.
Consolidate the Brazil as a global leader in biopolymers..
Continuous operation since 2010, with expansion planned for 275,000 tons/year until 2026.
Cumulative avoidance of more than 8 million tons of CO₂, with a projection of 10 million tons avoided by 2030 (scopes 1 and 2).
Environmental certifications: ISCC, Bonsucro and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with standards ISO 14040/44.
Current annual capacity: 275,000 tons of green polyethylene.
Emissions inventories (2018–2020): 769,000 tCO₂e (AR4/IPCC methodology).
Expansion planned until 2050, in line with the global goal of replacing up to 20% of conventional plastics to bioplastics.
Integration with sustainable agriculture: Crop rotation and preservation of biomes (Cerrado, Amazon, Pantanal and Atlantic Forest).
Measurable and replicable climate impact on an international scale.
