ABOUT IT
The project's iWrc is a collaborative platform that connects cooperatives and independent waste pickers to companies in the recycling chain, based on three pillars: human dignity, fair trade and circular materials. Its main objective is to humanize the recycling value chain through a fair trade system and training for workers in cooperatives and groups that work in solid waste recovery.
To achieve this goal, iWrc's vision was developed jointly, seeking to create an environment where people, communities and businesses can benefit from turning waste into valuable resources. The platform sets out to eliminate individual risk factors faced by those working in recycling in emerging markets and living at or below the poverty line, such as child labor, forced labor and unsafe and inhumane working conditions.
iWrc's goal is to improve the health and well-being of waste pickers by integrating the material they collect into the value chains of corporate partners, both public and private. To date, iWrc's approach has helped reinsert thousands of tons of recycled material into the supply chain, generated significant savings in logistics costs, generated millions in revenue for partner cooperatives and trained thousands of workers in the recycling market.
Results and Objectives
Since the start of operations in 2018, 1,650 tons of electronic waste have been recycled, generating a reduction in emissions of 3,300 tons CO2eq. The project aims to increase the volume to 1000 tons per year.
