Brazil for the Environment

ABOUT IT

Historically, the municipality of Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, has suffered from a lack of water supply for its residents due to long periods of water scarcity caused by a lack of rainfall. A few years ago, the municipality carried out a mapping study of areas that contained water springs, but which no longer had the capacity to generate water due to the absence of riparian vegetation in the surrounding area. After the mapping, the municipality put out a public call for companies interested in supporting the restoration of this vegetation to contribute. In this way Starrett supported the planting of 850 native tree seedlings around 6 identified springs.

Results and Objectives

One of these springs was on a private farm where cattle were raised. Due to cattle trampling the ground in search of pasture, the soil was totally compacted, which contributed to the spring's inability to release water. About a year after planting, it was already possible to clearly feel the waterlogged soil around the identified point, even during a period of months without rainfall.
