ABOUT IT
3M invests in Research, Development and Technological Innovation (RD&I) to drive sustainable packaging projects, with an emphasis on circularity and environmental protection. Concrete examples of these efforts include the elimination of PVC packaging, the introduction of recycled plastic packaging and the development of packaging composed of mono and cellulose materials.
Results and Objectives
Some outstanding projects and results related to sustainable packaging at 3M of Brazil are:
PVC Free packaging by 2025: since 2020, 3M Brazil has eliminated 68% of this packaging from its portfolio and is maintaining an accelerated pace of development and innovation in order to reach this target.
Recycled rigid plastic: in 2021, the company launched its first 100% recycled HDPE rigid plastic (PCR) packaging on the Brazilian automotive market. This PCR is produced by automatically sorting bottle scrap into bales and flakes to obtain granulated post-consumer resins.
Mono materials and cellulose: with regard to flexible plastics, the company has been working with its suppliers to develop packaging made up of mono material and with recycled content (5-30% PCR), as well as cellulose-based film solutions, reducing dependence on the use of virgin fossil-based plastic.
Efficient packaging: replacing physical Instruction Manuals with QRCode automation for products aimed at the dental industry. As a result, it is estimated that packaging material will be reduced by 1.2 tons per year and productivity will increase.
Re-engineering the pallet box for export: the application of new technologies in re-engineering resulted in a project that made it possible to reduce the use of wood by more than 58 tons per year, replacing it with high-performance corrugated materials.
